Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) Training
The Brain Injury Association of America's Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) is the largest national program providing education, training, certification, and ongoing resources for multidisciplinary specialists in the brain injury community. ACBIS offers this voluntary certification program for professionals working in brain injury services to earn a nationally recognized credential: Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS). This accreditation is considered the gold standard for brain injury training across the U.S.
Becoming a CBIS is an intensive training but well worth the effort. The CBIS certification delves into the essential aspects of brain injury treatment needed to effectively care for patients. A variety of disciplines have already become certified in North Dakota – from speech-language pathologists to optometrists.

Provisional CBIS Training
The Provisional Certified Brain Injury Specialist (PCBIS) designation is for those who intend to develop a career working with individuals who have sustained a brain injury but don't have the needed 500 hours of hours of experience in the field of brain injury yet. The Brain Injury Association of America offers this PCBIS certification which allows you to sit for the exam and then obtain official certification once you have reached your 500 hours. This is a great option for students! Contact Carly at carly.endres@und.edu for more information and mention you are interested in PCBIS training.
Maintaining CBIS Status
Acquire 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in the field of brain injury annually. NDBIN has many opportunities for you to get these CEUs, including:
- Attending the Mind Matters Conference
- Watching Webinar Wednesdays presentations
- Attending the virtual Concussion Symposium
- Attending quarterly North Dakota CBIS virtual check-ins
- Completing article reviews
NDBIN's first group certified in North Dakota, July 2019.
